Adobe Creative Suite uses a lot of keyboard shortcuts that require function keys. The way the MacBook Pro is set up out of the box, the function keys at the top of the keyboard are used for special functions like adjusting the brightness. In order to get F1 to actually send an F1, you have to hold down the fn key. You can reverse this behavior though, so that the keyboard sends the function keys by default, and you press the key chord with fn to get the special features.
Go to System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse and check the box next to ‘Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys.’
Thanks to this post for clarifying that.
